Mentor's Senior Brian Cline has breakout Tournament

Led by Senior Brian's Cline 74, the Mentor Cardinals finished tied for 21st in the 2007 Red Tail Golf Invitational. The annual tournament was hosted by St. Ignatius High School, is a preview of state caliber teams for the 2007 Boys Division I Golf Tournament in Columbus, with perennial powers Dublin Jerome, Upper Arlington, Cincinnati Moeller and St. Xavier to name a few. Junior Mike Guarino finished second for the Cardinals with an 80 score.

Other scores for Mentor were: Senior Matt Curtis 91; Junior Steve Petite 93. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller won the team title with a 303 score. Team and individual results are listed below

Junior Mike Guarino was the only Mentor Golfer to shoot in the 70's as he shot a 79 to pace Mentor to a second place finish in the Annual University School Founder's Day Tournament at Fowler's Mill Golf Course.

Mentor shot a team total 331 while, University School shot 313 for their first place finish. Senior Brian Cline finished second individually for Mentor with an 81; while Junior Steve Petite shot a 83 and Senior Matt Curtis completed the scoring for Mentor with an 88.

Other Mentor scores included Junior Mitch Granger with a 90 and Senior Kevin McKinney with a 93.

Columbus, Ohio - Saturday, October 20, 2007

Senior Brian Cline led the Mentor Cardinals with an 84 and a tenth place team finish on day two of the 2007 Boys Division I State Golf Tournament. Junior Mike Guarino did the same on day one with an identical score of 84.

The Mentor Cardinals, who finished fourth in the Northeast District, were plagued by high and tricky winds on a very difficult and demanding 7,000 Scarlet Golf Course. Mentor Coach George Polinsky still was optimistic with the Cardinals overall performance, “we came down here to move up the ladder. . .and that is exactly what happened,” Coach Polinsky said.

“Those golfers who could hit the ball low had an added advantage too and this is something we have to work on as a team for next year” Polinsky said, “In order to shoot lower scores we need to learn handle the wind along with positioning our approach shots correctly to play this enormous golf course well,” Polinsky added.
